Canadian Food Focus showcases Arctic Apples during Global Biotech Week

September 16, 2024

Canadian Food Focus, a key resource for consumers seeking information about Canadian food and farming, is proud to be a collaborator for Global Biotech Week in 2024.

Global Biotech Week is an international event that celebrates and raises awareness of the biotech innovations that are shaping our world. The event began as a gathering of provincial partners Canada in 2003, and has since become an international awareness week, with events taking place in Europe, the United States, Australia and Canada.

Canadian Food Focus will be hosting a webinar with Sarah Evanega, Vice President of Business Development with Okanagan Specialty Fruits on September 25 to help consumers and food professionals learn more about the Arctic Apple.

“Biotechnology innovations have allowed us to make healthy food more accessible through the development of the Artic Apple,” said Evanega. “These innovations have offered opportunities to eat healthier and reduce food waste.”

Artic apples are non-browning. This is important when you consider that an incredible 40% of the annual harvest of apples currently finds its way into wastebaskets. Through bioengineering, the apples’ own genes have ‘turned off’ the enzyme that makes apples brown when cut and allows them to stay orchard-fresh for up to 28 days.

“Global Biotech Week is such a great fit for our work at Canadian Food Focus,” said Managing Director Dorothy Long. “We focus on what Canadians want to know about their food. We provide information about all foods across the country, answer specific questions, and address issues like sustainability, how food is grown and raised, and food affordability. Biotechnology is a critical tool to address many of these issues important to consumers.”

Interested food professionals and consumers are encouraged to join the discussion on September 25:
